I Am Under You, But Nothing Is Under Me! (Almost)

Once the foundation was dry and all cleaned up, they put these large timbers which have a name (that I forget) all the way around. In the picture, they're the dark line between the concrete and the wood. Then comes the Underfloor!

Finally, it looks more like something is being built here and less like a lot of mud and debris!

Just before New Year's Eve, we stopped by to grab the mail and watch for a little bit. Here you see Noah, my mother, and Zoë standing in the neighbor's driveway. In case you're wondering why you almost never see Zoë in the pictures, it's not because we love her less. It's just that the insatiable curiosity and boundless energy of an almost-two-year-old really don't mix with a construction site. Usually, when I stop by to take pictures, Zoë waits patiently (sort of) in the car.

Really, though, she's quite interested in the process.

More hard work, but at least there's the tree to offer some shade:

If you look closely you might notice that while some of the boards are the bright yellow color of fresh lumber, other pieces are very grey. The grey pieces, in a previous incarnation, served as parts of the concrete molds for the foundation. Resource efficient!

Here's what's left of our one wall. "Wait!" you say, "I thought you needed that wall to comply with city regulations!" Well, according to the city inspector, turns out we didn't, and builders seem to be of the opinion that new materials are much better to work with the old, leftover bits of houses, so bye-bye wall!

Next time: Plumbing and sheeting!
